Diet For Rosacea: Foods To Eat And Avoid

Skin health and diet are closely linked. If you want healthy skin, then you must have a health diet. Rosacea can be triggered by eating certain foods, so knowing which ones these are will help prevent flare-ups. Each case is different however, so food that maybe fine for one rosacea patient may not be for another. For this reason, it will take some trial and error before being able to put together the right diet for rosacea. By eating right, you will help manage the condition far better while also improving your overall health.

The following will cover foods that trigger rosacea and which foods should be a part of a diet for rosacea.

Trigger Foods For Rosacea

Rosacea gets aggravated by anything that stimulates more blood flow to the face. Spicy foods for example do just that, in addition to other hot foods and beverages. Others include alcohol, caffeine, peppers, hot sauce, spicy seasonings, and marinades. Chocolate, cheese, pasta, plums, sour cream, citrus fruits, and soy sauce are others that have been know to trigger rosacea.

Soda drinks and others that contain artificial sweeteners or aspartame have know to result in redness in about 1/3 of the cases. If this happens to you, then take it completely out of your diet. Sweets are vascular dilators, and should be avoided anyway because they are highly acidic foods. Generally speaking, if it’s not healthy for you to eat in general, then it won’t help with rosacea either.

The worst foods for rosacea are the ones that provide tremendous energy boosts in a short period of time. These are high calorie carbohydrates, such as breads and pasta, and foods high in fat such as junk food.

Diet For Rosacea

The less calories there are to burn, the cooler your body will be. This means that redness will decrease since the body isn’t as warm. A diet for rosacea then should include eating more smaller meals and eating snacks during the course of the day. Eating smaller meals per day is encouraged by nutrition experts even if you don’t have rosacea.

Drink 8 or more glasses of water each day. Take your time to chew food so it can digest faster and eat more slowly.

What should you eat? A good diet for rosacea contains a lot of fibre, fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Blueberries, bilberries, and blackberries are low in sugar and are great sources of vitamin C.

Eat cooked rather than raw foods, as they are easier to digest. Fish and chicken are recommended as red meats. Tofu is a great source of protein, and seaweed is healthy for the skin. Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory properties, and licorice is a kitchen herb that could be included in a diet for rosacea.

Other foods that are recommended include Omeg3 fish and supplements and olive oil. Begin writing down everything you eat in a journal so you can track which foods cause flare-ups and which ones don’t.
